PENGUIN CHAIR BY THEO RUTH FOR ARTIFORT

Theo Ruth can be considered the Pioneer of Artifort’s design traditions. After studying to be a furniture and interior designer in the Dutch city Maastricht, he started working for Wagemans & Van Tuinen in 1936. First as a furniture maker and in 1939 he became head of the design- and manufacturing department. Ruth was Artifort’s first permanent designer. He was well known for his cutting edge designs for mainly living rooms. His most famous chairs are the Congo (1952) and Penguin chair. He also inspired a lot of other designers at Artifort. Theo Ruth died in 1971, but his designs are still famous around the world as one of the highlights of Dutch design.
